Setting up a VoIP Telephone System

Please excuse me but I'm a little confused when it comes to all the different acronyms in this topic (pbx vs VoIP vs SIP trunking).

So we've got an office with a couple cisco IP phones which are not yet connected. We got 2 live telephone lines that we could use and a raspberry pi.

We would like the IP phones to receive inbound and make outbound calls over the landline that we have. My question would be, how I would go about doing this.

If I understand this correctly I can install a pbx system like Asterisk und the Raspberry Pi, hook up the cisco phones to that pbx system and then add an SIP trunk to be able to make normal calls.

The problem, that is if I understood the way the pbx system works correctly, how I would go about hooking up the raspberry Pi to the phone line and then how I would configure the SIP trunk.

It would be extremely nice if someone could tell me whether I'm on the right track or I completely misunderstood the way pbx systems work, and could give me a heads up on how this can be done.

Toll fraud is real, f**king real.

If any of the Asterisk/phones are not set up properly (and securely), you are in for a rude awakening like no other.

If you want to set up an Asterisk, get a professional to set it up properly.
