It is used for the cache engine to advertise itself to the router.

The Cache also tells the router what traffic to redirect using WCCP.

Let me know if this helps.

Gilles.

Hi,

WCCP is the communication protocol between a router and CEs, the devices use this protocol to tell each other, who they are and if they are available.

To use WCCP, it has to be configured on both sites (router and CE).

If you configure WCCP at a router, the router is able to redirect webtraffic (i.e. port 80) to the CEs. The CE takes the request and answer it like a cach. If the SE knows the requested content it will fulfill the request.

The benefit here is, that you can make transparent caching without making any changes at server site and at user site and you can build a "cluster"of CEs, where you can add and remove the devices without impact to the users.

Hope this helps.

Sigi
