Without writing a book, WAAS uses TCP optimization and compression for all TCP traffic that is redirected to it. Also, on top of the basic TCP optimizations, there are also Layer 7 Application Optimization(AO). Currently in 4.0 there is a CIFS AO, but in future releases (4.1.x), there will be more AOs for things like HTTP, NFS, RTSP, etc.

Check out the following for a little more detail...

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6870/index.html

Hope that helps,

Dan
