SmartFilter on CE507

Hi,

A customer of mine would really like to run SmartFilter on his CE507 without the need of an external server. I am having a hard time finding literature on how to do this.

Is this possible and if so, where can I find "how to" tech. docs?

Depends on the version if ACNS your running, you really want 5.0 upwards (all the later releases are stable, I've done deployments with them all) However there are a few considerations.

To enable smartfilter set the box up with normal proxy services for http

eg http proxy incoming 80 8080

then you enable smartfilter with

url-filter http proxy smartfilter enable (from memory so you'd need to check it) or do it from the CE GUI)

Then you *Have* to install the server and console on a windows NT based box or solaris box (I'd recommend Windows as its easier). The server element runs as a windows service and doesn't really take up much memory, the console is a jave based GUI that can then be installed on multiple machines and pointed at the server.

The thing to note is ACNS 5.0 & 5.1 used Smartfilter 3.12 and 3.22 which relies on you using the transaction logs internal to the CE for reporting and then an external application called CYFIN for the reporting. This I have to say is a pain! but does work.

5.2 uses a self contained server/console/report and Smartfilter 4 which is supposed to be better, i've held of doing an upgrade of my existing deployment till January as the code is still pretty new.
