Hi,

This is known bug in IOS 12.3. If you upgrade to 12.4T or 12.3(12.8)T the problem may go away.

The bug ide is CSCeg25043

Here is the detail:

Message saying Unable to read eeprom appears during bootup

Symptom:

A message saying "Unable to read eeprom" appears during bootup if there are any
empty slots on the router.

This is observed with 12.3(11)T, and seems to be related to smartinit. However,
the messages appear irrespective of whether smartinit is enabled or disabled.

Conditions:

The message appears multiple times if multiple slots
are empty. If all the slots are populated, the message does not appear.

Workaround:

Right now there is no workaround.

HTH

Reza
