Now we get to RP

00:00:05: %OIR-6-CONSOLE: Changing console ownership to route processor

but it can't boot and SP returns to ROMMON detecting it.

00:03:07: %OIR-SP-6-CONSOLE: Changing console ownership to switch processor

I did not see those characters (VV'¦&'L'¤IªVªK*TK¦KSêÔTªeª5) before but seems that RP does not like the image (or formatting).

Try the following:

After SP is up and yields control to RP
(you see that message "Changing cnsole ownership to route processor"),
quickly send break sequence, change config-register to 0x2102
and do a reset before SP detects the fact RP is not up.

By that we can at least see how MSFC is booting and if what the problems it sees.

Nik

It is recommending a format:

detected on SP (module: 1), formatting is recommended.

Can you go back to old OS, format the flash the add the new IOS and reboot?

HTH

Bill,

Just want to check if this MSFC (RP) was working before when you were using CATOS on SP in hybrid mode? Just want to make sure it did not have any HW problems.

If it was then I guess we need to re-format/change the flashcards. Also you can try to boot from disk0: (PCMCIA card) from SUP which you upgarded first without no issue.

You can find bootflash locations here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/hardware/Config_Notes/78_12667.html

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/hardware/Config_Notes/78_14703.html

Nik,

From what we saw MSFC did not actually crash. It just did not boot and SP took the ownership back. So MSFC can't boot the image for some reason:

- IOS RP image portion not good

- formmating not correct

- HW problem

- defect

- flash bad sector

So we need to exclude all these posibilities.

One of the ways is to get disk0: from first SUP and try with that if not already tried. Other way - try to load back to old OS- hybrid and then format all disks under MSFC IOS.

One more way - just replace bottflash on MSFC and SP.

Unfortunately don't have universal way as it still not clear why MSFC does not boot.

Nik

OK, let me make sure I understand the process up to this point. If the switch boots into SP rommon and I type boot disk0:imagename, the switch then loads the image and successfully boots the SP...after which the process is handed off to the RP (which fails). So is the RP trying to load the same image that is specified in the boot disk0: command? If so, is there any other file needed to successfully boot the RP? If yes, what is it and how can I get it onto the switch?

Hello,

Adding to Glen. This is right - that is why I was asking if MSFC was working in CATOS/hybrid mode. And that is why one of the idea to return to CATOS is to check if MSFC is workable. You can actually pull out the module to see if MSFC daughter board is present on top.

Regarding the image. IOS has a single image both for SP and RP. It has just to portions of sub-image. SP loads SP portion and when control is passed to RP - it is trying to load RP portion from same file. So file itself seems to be good as long as you also tried another flash.

Let's make sure that MSFC is fine and present - first by examining the sup card and 2 loading hybrid image on it. (putting CATOS back- can be done copying CATOS image on disk0 from working SUP ).

Nik,
