I'm also working in a data centre for an ISP in Malaysia, but not on the shift-work. They do have a couple of teams running shifts, but each team run a 12-hr shift.

I find most of the data center shift work here run on a 12hr rotating shift.

I have worked in two different companies that had 24x7 operation.

First company:

3 x 8 hour shifts, 5 days per week. On the weekend, volunteers worked 12 hour shifts for overtime. We sometimes had a shortage of volunteers.

Second company, more complicated but I liked this better:

4 teams of staff. You always stayed with your team, only seeing the other teams at handover time. We called them shift A, B, C and shift D. I was on shift B. (shift = team)

During the week (Monday to Friday), 3 teams worked a single 8 hour shift per day. Let's say Shift A started Monday morning 8am-4pm, next shift B came on at 4pm-12am, then shift C would work 12am-8am. So the last shift of the five day week finished saturday morning at 8am.

At this point shift A (who worked days during thwe week) would split into two teams, and work a total of 4 x 12 hour shifts to cover the weekend (each person doing 2 x 12 hour shifts, either 8am to 8pm, or 8pm to 8am). Shift A did thius until 8am on Monday, and then had a whole week off, and would not report to work until the Monday night following, when they would start a 5 day week of 12am-8am.

So each team would work one week of 12am-8am Monday to Friday, then the week after do one week of 4pm-12am Monday to Friday, and then a week of 8am-4pm Monday to Friday, followed immediately by 2 x 12 hour shifts on a weekend (at overtime rates), and then get a week off with pay.

So you would cycle through the whole thing every four weeks, work one weekend and get a week off.

This system ensured 24 x 7 operation, ensured staff did not get over tired and everybody liked it. The downside is that you need to assemble four totally seperate teams, each with their own manager etc.

Cool eh?
