Introducing Cisco Interface Security Audit: Open-Source Security Asses

Over the past few months, I've been working on a project that aims to simplify one of the most repetitive and important tasks in network administration: reviewing the security configuration of Cisco router and switch interfaces.

Today, I'm excited to share my open-source project:

Cisco Interface Security Audit

The project automatically analyzes Cisco device configurations, evaluates interface security settings, identifies missing security features, and provides actionable recommendations—including the CLI commands required to improve the configuration.

Why I Built This

In many enterprise networks, interface security verification is still performed manually.

Engineers often have to inspect hundreds—or even thousands—of interfaces to answer questions like:

Is Port Security configured?
Is BPDU Guard enabled where appropriate?
Are unused interfaces properly secured?
Are access and trunk ports configured according to security best practices?
Which interfaces require additional hardening?

Performing these checks manually is time-consuming and increases the risk of overlooking security gaps.

This project automates that process and generates a consistent security assessment.

What the Tool Does

The Cisco Interface Security Audit tool:

Parses Cisco IOS configuration files
Audits interface security settings
Detects missing or weak security configurations
Assigns security findings to each interface
Recommends improvements
Generates the required Cisco CLI commands for remediation
Produces human-readable reports that simplify review and remediation

Rather than simply reporting problems, the tool focuses on helping engineers understand what should be improved and how to implement it.
