I got this response back from PDI and it appears it is MDS or nothing:

MDS is needed for any BB to have Data connectivity without Data connectivity it won't work as presence or jabber needs data connectivity however, MDS /BES can have its own firewall. So customer may not use ASA at all, and BB can go directly through BES to CUPS for example.

There is no other way, bb has to have data and the only way is through bes and mds

Is there a method for authenticting directly through an ASA in the DMZ to a CUPS server in my private network with the Jabber IM for Blackberry client? I have a client who does not use MDS on BES so this connection needs to be routed over the public internet to my ASA over SSL as the Jabber IM for Blackberry datasheet seems to imply is possible. The Blackberry client does not support the same VPN method using anyconnect as the IOS/mac/android/Windows clients so it is not clear to me how this SSL connection is setup. Any advice/documentation?
