&lt;P&gt;The pros I see of having border spines are:&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;UL&gt;
&lt;LI&gt;lower costs - no need for dedicated border leafs&lt;/LI&gt;
&lt;LI&gt;if the spines are modular switches (Nexus 9500) you have higher resilience and availability (redundancy provided by LC/SUPs)&lt;/LI&gt;
&lt;LI&gt;most of the times, the spines are having high bandwidth and are equipped with high speed ports&lt;/LI&gt;
&lt;/UL&gt;
&lt;P&gt;Stay safe,&lt;/P&gt;
