We are currently working with a consultant on a project to implement and upgrade our wireless network. The question that we were asked is, do we want the wireless only licensing for ISE or wired and wireless licensing. Is 802.1x in a wired situation where access ports are fairly restricted into offices, or areas where supervision is present, worthwhile? Do I have the wrong perspective on 802.1x?

Now, I'm not ISE specific here... from the top of my head.

Granted that your employees the benefit for wired might be minimal. The concern mostly comes from security folks who would want to make sure that you're plugging in a proper device into a port.

Also, what you could gain is, that wherever you would plug in your PC you would still have same policies applied.

If you do have conference rooms with wired access and are inviting third parties, you might benefit from wired dot1x.

I'm sure there's more but benefits will depend on specifics of the environment 🙂
