Cannot SSH or console into ACS Appliance

I have a Cisco ACS appliance that I shutdown in order to move

When the system came back up, I can get into the web interface without any issues, but I cannot SSH or console into the device. I get a prompt, but it tells me authentication failed.

I created a new recovery account within the GUI and tried to get int that way, but it still won't let me

Has anyone seen this before? What can I do?

Hi Colin,

If you cannot SSH into the device, then unfortunately you would need to do password recovery. There is no other way.

Here are the steps:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/94721/acs-5x-cli-password-recovery-procedure

Hope this helps.

Hi Colin,

That is only for GUI. You cannot reset or change <G class="gr_ gr_70 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="70" data-gr-id="70"><G class="gr_ gr_130 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="130" data-gr-id="130">cli</G></G> password from GUI. To double <G class="gr_ gr_341 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="341" data-gr-id="341">check</G> <G class="gr_ gr_342 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="342" data-gr-id="342">i</G> created one and tested. I can successfully login to GUI with <G class="gr_ gr_486 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="486" data-gr-id="486">new</G> user which has recovery account enabled but cannot do so on <G class="gr_ gr_478 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="478" data-gr-id="478">cli</G>.

<G class="gr_ gr_561 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="561" data-gr-id="561">Above</G> mentioned procedure is the only <G class="gr_ gr_562 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="562" data-gr-id="562">option</G> unfortunately.

But how would the password change on a reboot? I logged into the CLI with my credentials, halted the system, moved the server, and then couldn't log back in

how does that happen?

If this is a bug, it is a HUGE problem for Cisco

Hi Colin,

I am not sure why just stopping the server would do this. <G class="gr_ gr_121 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="121" data-gr-id="121">i</G> have rebooted my server and <G class="gr_ gr_122 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="122" data-gr-id="122">i</G> do not see a problem.

I am wondering if it had something to do with <G class="gr_ gr_362 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="362" data-gr-id="362">configuration</G> not saved to startup. I will update this thread if <G class="gr_ gr_363 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="363" data-gr-id="363">i</G> manage to test this.

When I ssh'd into the appliance and issued a halt command (in order to power it down and move it), I was asked to save the configuration, to which I answered yes. That apparently re-wrote the CLI admin password.

Keep in mind that this appliance is 3 years old and I have been using that same account all along, and the config has been saved before. Don't know why this happened. I phoned up other engineers I know and told them to be careful when rebooting their appliances ...
