Hi,

I am running ACS version 4.0 on a physically server and would like to move it to another server. ideally i would like to start from scratch and have the media to install version 4.0.

Could you someone give me the installation guide and any things i need to bear in mind ? Also how do i move the database from 1 server to another (just the database alone so that i dont have create user accounts )

Also regarding the licensing, do i need to contact cisco or is there a way i can move the license from 1 server to another /

When you say "Physical server" does that mean ACS appliance?

If yes, than you have to download the the recovery image from the cisco.com. Reimage the new appliance with the recovery DISC. here is a supporting link:

You can take backup from the existing appliance and restore it on the new one that you reiamged above.

In case it's not an appliance and MS windows server like 2003 or 2008 than the procedure is little different.

Thanks for the reply. I have installed the original acs.4.0 using the original media. But it didnt ask for any license file. Just wondering do i need a license if i use the original media and if i do can i pull it from the old server ?

Second question, if i take a backup from the exisiting server and restore on the new ACS that i built will it work ?

ACS 4.x doesn't need any licence/key/PAK. All you need a valid contract with cisco. Yes, it should work if you have same code on the old and new boxes.

that means if you have a valid contract then only you can have tac to publish images/software/recovery CD to you. Btw, ACS 4.0 is one of the most unstable version we ever worked with. If you have plans to continue working on 4.x train then atleast upgrade it to 4.2.1.15 the latest one. Even this version is going out of support next year.

You may need to think about acs 5.x

Yes agree with you. we are planning to upgrade to 5.1 but is the upgrade to 4.x free of charge ?

that need to be checked. when you open a TAC case, the concern team will validate the contract with the service relation team. TAC can only publish you required images only if service relation entitle you.

You can only migrate the following ACS 4.x versions. The acs 4.0 will not help you in migration anyways.

Thanks Jatin, do you know upgrading from 4.0 to 4.1 is a free version ? or do i have to contact tac ?

Also when i take a backup and restore onto the new server ,does it copy the ip address as well ( Mangement ip used to access the box ?)

Yes you should have a contract. It's not free.

In case of ACS appliance, will not copy the ip address. In case of windows, you will always get an option to delete the old ip address.
