Other than new features and bug fixes, their respective operations are almost exactly the same. If you are using the Firepower service module SSP, 9.12 is the latest ASA version you can run with it. (Firepower is limited to 6.4.0.x on that hardware.)

I am planning to upgrade ASA5585-X from ASA 9.1(7)16 to ASA 9.12(4). Both versions are 9.x, but there is big difference between these two versions. Is there anything I need to be aware of?

HW= ASA5585-X

Looks like you can upgrade directly from your current version to 9.12.x, without an interim upgrade.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/asa/upgrade/asa-upgrade/planning.html#ID-2152-0000000a

Ensure you also upgrade your ASDM version 7.13(1.101) to ensure you can access the newer ASA features from the GUI.
