FTD 2140 upgrade

Hi to all,

our two 2140 FTD run software 7.0.6

But looking in cisco site i noticed that there is 7.2.5 however the automatic update through FMC does not suggest this upgrade.

Any reason for that?

Should i manually download and update the two FTDs?

The FMC doesn't download any major release packages, however, it would download the latest packages of the installed release on the FTDs. So, yes, you would need to manually download the latest recommend package and then upload it to the FMC before you can push to the FTDs.

@Ditter the FMC downloads only patches and hotfixes, not major releases. So you download the major release package and upload.

So firstly i upgrade the FMC to version 7.2.5 and then FMC will guide me to upgrade the FTDs also or i will i have also to manually upgrade the FTDs also to version 7.2.5 ?

That is correct, firstly you upgrade the FMC to 7.2.5, and then you download the 7.2.5 from Cisco portal for the FTDs, you upload the image to the FMC, and finally you would be ready to kick off the FTDs upgrade from the FMC. In other words, even if you upgrade the FMC to the 7.2.5 it won't download the 7.2.5 for the FTDs because that is a major release compared to the version the FTDs are running hence why you still need to do that manual download/upload of that image.

Note that as of FMC version 7.4 you will also get prompts for major release upgrades.
