What's the use of TCP version of port 514? UDP is being used for syslog but not sure about the TCP-514. Can someone put some light on TCP version?

Some decades ago, TCP/514 was used for remote shell (rsh). Nowadays it should not be relevant any more for general use.

Ankit,

Ankit,

As karsten pointed out TCP 514 was used by Remote Shell and nowadays few online games work on TCP 514.

UDP 514 is still used for syslog purpose.

However, many network devices now prefer TCP based sysloging, so there is an option where one can just mention which protocol to use, if you mention TCP without giving a port, it by default takes TCP 514. ASA is an example of this.

Hope this helps,
