Transfer Botnet License from ASA 5510 to ASA 5525-X

hi all,

i have a 5510 that has a botnet license which would be replaced by 5525-X.

how do i transfer the botnet license to 5525-X? do i just copy and paste the running activation key?

will i get another 365 days?

Hi,

A license key is tied to a device serial number. Activation key valid for one device cannot be installed to another device.

You should reach out to the cisco licensing team and get their help for transfer of license.

sorry, just a follow up question. can i request TAC to give new the botnet license activation key for the 5525x, say a few days before migrating from 5510?

will this affect the botnet license validity and functionality on the 5510?

Unless risseth knows about some new policy that I'm not aware of, Cisco's policy is not to re-issue ASA licenses for a different model in the case of hardware upgrades.

The long-standing policy is that licenses are only re-issued in the event of an RMA. Those happen as part of the TAC case and the newly received device is given any required activation keys immediately as part of the case resolution.

i understand the licensing for RMA policy but it doesn't make sense buying new botnet license for our 5525-x since we still have 338 more days left per my last post on the 5510.

i hope anyone from cisco TAC/security team can shed a light on this matter.
