Hi Shubham,

Primarily router's core function is to provide routing functionality but with the advent of newer versions, they also provide security features. You can use features like Zone Based Firewall on routers to perform security functions.

Firewalls, on the other hand, are stateful device which are essentially configured for maintaining sessions and ensuring return traffic is allowed. They provide VPN termination as well like routers. Firewalls can be used in failover to provide easy redundancy whereas , routers require HSRP to be configured and will need SSO as well if VPNs sessions are to be synchronized , this being a bit more complext setup.

Deploying these devices are subjective , if you have small deployment , then you can leverage routers for routing and security features. In case you have larger deployments , you might want to have routers for dedicated routing and firewalls for dedicated security operations.

Here is a must read on the said topic:-
https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11115861/cisco-asa-vs-router-firewall-feature

https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/thread/4995

Regards,
Dinesh Moudgil

P.S.

Hello Guys,

I would like to know major difference Between Router vs Firewall, why we use firewall even Router has capability to do that now a days,

why someone will deploy firewall in the Network?

what are the Key features in Firewall that are not available in Router now a days?,

Why Cisco Firewall is Special for Today's enterprise Network,

Comparing Cisco ASA vs ASR, ISR Router and all latest Router's.

Thanks!
