Can anyone confirm please if it should be possible to add an ASA 5520-AIP-SSM into Cisco Security Manager?

Each time I try it fails telling me the OS, context mode or routing mode is not supported.

I'm running the ASA box in single context, routed mode. I've tried older 7.1 firmware but have recently upgraded it to 7.2.

You have to add the ASA and the AIP-SSM seperately. Currently, I think CSM only supports upto v7.1 code which is why you might be seeing the error message. As a workaround, try adding the ASA using the 'add device from config file' method. Add the AIP-SSM using the 'add new device' method. Make sure the AIP-SSM has a management address and that the AIP-SSM lists the CSM ip address as an allowed host.
