topic Firewall Location in Network Security

Hello all,

I am planning to integrate a Cisco 2621 (I know it's an older router) into our network alongside a Fortigate 60 firewall. The question I'm stumbling on is where to place the firewall - in front of the router or behind it? I figure that if I placed the firewall behind the router it would be more vulnerable to all sorts of attacks - DoS, etc., but from what I've read online, this seems to be the preferred topology.

I'm unsure of where the best place to put the firewall is. Perhaps someone could enlighten me?

Thank you!

A typical placement is in front of firewall to perform any "advanced" routing functions.

But the end placement will depend on what you will need each of the devices to do 😉
