Major, maintenance and Interim releases. Major and Maintenance are 3 digit releases like 8.2.4 etc, and interim release are 4 digits , like 8.2.4.4. Interim releases are have some critical bug fixes done by the developement team, all these releases are not patches but full blown software version, so to install 8e.2.4.4 on ASA, you would need to uninstall the previous version, it cannot be installed as a patch kind as in windows.
