I have completed my CCNA qualification and i am doing some volunteering for a none proffit eletronics recyciling company they receved some cisco pix 515e firewalls and i was aloud to keep one so i can learn how hardwaire firewalls work and how to set them up but i can not seem to connect to it is there a way to completely reset the device to factory settings without any ip address or passwords i do not have any cables for the device but i have made a straight and cross over cable and there is a box of cables at the recyciling company from diffrent places if i need a specialist cable i may be able to find one

You need to find a Cisco console cable. It's RJ45 on the PIX end, and serial on the computer end.

It's blue and flat. Connect using Hyper Terminal.

Then you can search here for "password recovery" if need be.

is there any softwaire i will need for the firewall and if so where can i get this from i tryed to find it on here but i keep geting something about a business contract and all i want to do is just play with the settings

and am i rite using a cross over cable to go from pc to firewall

Hi Andy,

Yes, you would need a contract to be able to use any image on the pix box, but you can check on the pix falsh if it has any software image on the box, you can use that o boot up the image. Otherwise you would need a license for it.

It should sasy something like pix803.bin file.

so if i got the console cable reset the thing to factory would i still be able to use it without the softwaire and contract or would that restrict its use and what cables do i need to go from modem to firewall then firewall to pc am i correct with a cross over cable

Well, I would say first go step by step, you would need a console cable for the pix, boot it up chcek if it boots up or not, check if you ahve any image in the flash "show flash", you should see the files in it. Yes you would need a crossover cable for the PC and the modem.
