Hello,

We want to run ASA 8.4.x on an old ASA5540. We need to upgrade its memory to 2 Gb with the following memory upgrade: ASA5540-MEM-2GB=

I suspect that we will completely remove the existing 1 Gb of memory and replace it with 2 Gb. If this is the case, can I use this 1 Gb of memory removed from the ASA5540 and put it in a ASA5510 instead of buying a ASA5510-MEM-1GB= for the ASA5510?

Thanks,

Marc.

Hello Varun,

Thanks for your answer.

Searching in the forums today I found this question from April 2011 which is very similar to my question. It is titled: "ASA5540, 5520, 5510 memory upgrade" by micoogullari

The answer is different and states that memory is not compatible between different ASA models.

(I wanted to post a link to the mentioned post, but ended up link my own post... How do we point to other users' posts?)

I understand that ASA5580 or 5585X are pretty different (and ASA5505 too), but ASA5510/5520/5540 have pretty much the same form factor and, I thought, the same internal components. So who's right?

Thank you very much,

Marc.
