I'm new to using Cisco Networking products. I was given an assignment to determine if our enterprise 5510 and 5505 had IPS/IDS. In doing my research I discoververed that 5505 do not have IPS/IDS but you can purchase a card and 5510 have IPS/IDS modules. How do I determine if my 5510 has the IPS/IDS modue(s)

Both the 5505 and 5510 can use an IPS modules, but both are often used without. You can issue the command "show module" to see if you have them installed. For the 5505, the IPS card is announced EOS/EOL.

Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPad App

I looked at the configuration on my ASA 5510 and found that I am running IOS 8.2(1). Is the IPS module a software module that comes with this OS or is it an add-on hardware or software module? The documentation is confusing. For some reason our ASDM bombs out with .dll errors and the person who knows how to get into the CLI is not here so I could not run the show module command. This is a little off the subject but does ASDM require a specific version of IE? I'm thinking of upgrading to ASDM 7.1(1)

only the new -X (but not the 5585) ASAs have software-modules. On the 5505 and 5510 there are hw-modules. But first you should bring your ASA-access in order. You can try different browsers, but also make sure your Java is up to date.

Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPad App

After much reading and investigation found that my 5510 has the AIP SSM-10 hw module, however it is not configured. I will need learn how to do that and do it. Found that the server supporting the ASDM has automatic updates turned on for both Java and windows and some other software apps:< I'm not a fan of this! Anyway java 7 seems to be causing a problem. I saw something where this was being fixed in ASDM 6.4(5.206). I'll backout Java 7 and reinstall Java 6 with update 29 and see what happens. If swapping out the Java versions and IE versions doesn't work I'll upgrade to ASDM 7.1

Thanks everyone

Not too bad for 3 days on the job
