Upgrade to IPS

hello,

I did the upgrade to an IDS sensor on a module of a switch 6500. The upgrade was from a version 4.1 of IDS to version 5.1 of IPS.

But after the upgrade, the sensor shows this message: "There is no license key installed on the system.

The system will continue to operate with the currently installed

signature set. A valid license must be obtained in order to apply

signature updates. Please go to http://www.cisco.com/go/license

to obtain a new license or install a license."

The sensor has its own licence. What i need to do?

Carolina,

Starting in v5.1 of IPS you need a licensed IPS sensor in order to upgrade it and provide it the latest signatures. As long as the proper serial number is on a SmartNet contract that hasn't expired that licensing website will e-mail you a license to place on your IPS sensor... along with instructions. I was a bit nervous at first but it was one of the easier Cisco licensing issues I've had to deal with. If the sensor is managed through IPS MC you can even auto-license the device through the console. Hope this helps!

A small comment.

The service contracts for the sensors have changed names. They are no longer SmartNET contracts, and instead are now "Cisco Service for IPS" contracts.
