It is recommended to use both but to be more proficient in CLI as it comes in handy in the event ASDM is not accessible or render unusable.. asdm can help you be proficient in cli just pay close attention on how asdm does things and learn it to apply it in the command line..

recommendations check ciscopress , there are quite few books on pix/asa/fwsm that you can learn from, all cli and asdm.

http://www.ciscopress.com/index.asp?rl=1

Rgds

Jorge

Hi

We have been using ASDM and PDM for complete management of PIX and ASA from last 4 years including VPN. We rarely face any issues. Please be careful to apply the changes always once you do any configuration.

Best Regards

Dinesh

Good cisco articles
