Netranger questions

Can anyone answer the following questions-

1) When was NetRanger invented?

2) Will the Active IDS feature work with other firewalls than PIX such as Checkpoint or Netscreen? To be clear, I'm talking about the ability of Netranger to log in and dynamically modify ACLs on the firewall. Will Netranger only work with PIX in this regard, or will it also work with other firewalls?

If my memmory is correct, the original NetRanger version 1 was back around 1996.

The "Active IDS feature" you refer to is generally known as Blocking.

The sensor can block on certain Cisco Routers, the Pix Firewall, the Cat 6K switches, and the FWSM (Firewall Service Module for the Cat 6K).

It is not able to block on firewalls, routers, or switches from other vendors.

I was thinking it was around 1994 when Netranger was first out. I'm looking to narrow it down to the exact year. I'm doing some research Cisco/Juniper/ISS. Can anyone else confirm or deny 1994 or 1996?

The NetRanger product was acquired by Cisco with the Wheelgroup aquisition. From: http://newsroom.cisco.com/dlls/corp_021898.html the Wheelgroup was founded in 1995 and acquired in 1998.

The genealogy is NetRanger -> IDS -> IPS.
