So, I have 2 thoughts for you. The first is that you may be starting outgrow a single mailstore. The DB is presized for 40 messages per user for up to 10,000 users or about 1.25GB. When companies start to set up multiple mailstores, there are some backup considerations. Primarily, DRS has to be able to backup an entire mailstore and cluster data in one session. In some cases, folks will create multiple mailstores and do multiple backups - 1 per mailstore. You may or may not be in this boat but it's worth discussing with TAC for sure.

Secondly, a recommendation on SFTP server - solid, no issues, recommend it to every client - CopSSH.

Hailey

Please rate helpful posts!

When I run a backup and include the messages, the backup fails. Withouth selecting messages (database, etc.) the backup completes no problem. I've got a TAC case open now, but I've spent the last few days with him trying to install different SFTP servers on a windows box to get this to work (he feels it's a problem with my SFTP server) -- but all my other stuff backs up fine (CUCM, etc.)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a windows SFTP client or any ideas why my messages backup keeps failing? The size is large -- seems to fail at 1GB or 3.4GB --

Thanks.

I would suggest providing the DRS traces to TAC. Perform your backup with messages, note the time then from CLI gather the following directories:

file get activelog platform/drf/log

file get activelog platform/drf/trace

If you have timestamps of when things fail, those logs may help you understand what may be going on. Also, getting a network capture from the CLI of UC may be a good idea as well.

utils network capture file <FILENAMEWITHOUTBRACKETSITWILLALSOAPPEND.CAPFORYOU> count 100000 size all host all <IP of="" sftp="" server=""></IP></FILENAMEWITHOUTBRACKETSITWILLALSOAPPEND.CAPFORYOU>

Ctrl-c will stop the capture. You can collect the capture from RTMT

Hope that helps,

Brad

I have the same issue on the Publisher of a cluster running 7.1(3b)SU2. The subscriber backs up without issue. Only the Publisher has problems and always fails at about 50% of the message store. I have a TAC case open but very little info coming out so far that would be of value. I'll update if I get something solid. If you are running a cluster, give the backup a shot on the Subscriber (if you haven't already) and if that works - at least you'll get the message store backed up as the data is replicated anyway.

Hailey

Please rate helpful posts!

You just click the number of stars you want to give as a rating - 5 being the highest. Once you vote, you can't change it so give what you feel is applicable. You can rate a single post or every post, it's up to you.

To expand on the topic real quick - go ahead and back up both but do the following:

1) Create a separate backup path for each server on your SFTP server.

2) Backup the Pub to its SFTP path and select everything BUT the message store.

3) Backup the Sub as well to its own SFTP path BUT backup everything (doesn't hurt to have full backup of both even though it's a cluster with DB replication).

4) You'll have to reconfigure the DRS settings to implement the new backup path and such but this should work for you.

5) I set this up on my own prior to opening a TAC case and they validated that this is the best way to go about backing up the system given the issue with the Publisher.

Hailey

Please rate helpful posts!

That's good in your case but in other cases, this is not the problem however TAC seems pretty tied to it. I always recommend CopSSH which is Open SSHd for Windows. There are no file size issues and all other UC products back up fine. However, I have used Titan for another customer that wasn't comfortable using a free product and they have had good success with it as well. It's not free but it works well.

Thanks for the update.

Hailey

Would appreciate any guidance in this area. Have just created an addtional message store and was planning to migrate some users into it.

Regards

N

Norm, yes i got one of our linux guys to setup cygwin as the sftp server and it works every

time including the messages, until then we just didnt backup messages.......see below:

Hi Martin,

As my voicemail please find below details. The contact at Cisco TAC confirmed 20-30% success rate with FreeFTPd.

I have also included Cisco’s recommended SFTP list.

Thanks

Matt

CSCsm21349 Bug Details

DRS Direct Backup stuck for freeFTPd server when tar size grow over 1GB

RELEASE NOTE

Symptom:

When we try to SFTP any file directly to the freeFTPD 1.0.11 SFTP server (taking a backup) we are getting stuck at a stage where the file reached .99 GB size in the SFTP location. It never grows more than 1 GB. The actual data to be backed up is over 20 GB.

Conditions:

The folder of more than 1 GB size is tarred (GNU tar 1.13.25) to stdout. An output stream is created using a third party library, between stdout and the SFTP server. The output of the tar command is directed to remote server (freeFTPD). The JDK version used is 1.5.13 (The code is in java.). We are performing here an uploading function.

The file transfer is initiated successfully and the file size in this particular case is more than 1 GB. At the stage when the file size in SFTP server has reached .99 GB, the transfer process is stuck. The file inside the SFTP folder never goes above .99 GB (not size on disk). The whole process works fine when the tarred file size is less than 1GB or the SFTP is a native Linux one or Cygwin or OpenSSH. So basically the SFTP for data greater than 1 GB fails only for freeFTPD server.

Workaround:

All other FTPD servers other than freeFTPd will work. Cigwin, OpenSSH, native linux SFTP server all can be used instead of freeFTPd as a work around.

Further Problem Description:

freeFTPd team has informed that this is a known issue. FreeFTPd/OpenSSHd is no longer developed and is unsupported for DRF backups now.

Cisco Recommended SFTP software:

System Requirements

To back up data to a remote device on the network, you must have an SFTP server that is configured. Cisco allows you to use any SFTP server product but recommends SFTP products that have been certified with Cisco through the Cisco Technology Developer Partner program (CTDP). CTDP partners, such as GlobalSCAPE, certify their products with specified version of Cisco Unity Connection. For information on which vendors have certified their products with your version of Cisco Unity Connection, refer to the following URL:

http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/ctdp/Search.pl

Cisco uses the following servers for internal testing. You may use one of the servers, but you must contact the vendor for support:

•Open SSH (refer to http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/)

•Cygwin (refer to http://www.cygwin.com/)

•Titan (refer to http://www.titanftp.com/)

configuring cygwin below:
