WLC Management Interface as VLAN 0

Hi,

I understand it is a best practice to have the managment interface set to vlan 0 on the WLC. Why?

If multiple ports are trunked to the WLC and the WLC has an address in vlan 3, does that work or how do I make that work?

Right now the WLC is set to vlan 3 on the managment interface and a port channel is setup to pass vlan 3 along with the wlan vlans.

Thanks.

It was documented in earlier versions of the WLC code. I believe in v7.0 and later, it was suggested you tag the manager vlan due to QoS requirements. I typically will tag the manager interface in all my installs.

Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPhone App

So that explains why someone from a certain support organization told me to use vlan 0 and then seemed to waffle on it later. Thanks Scott.

Yeah... if you looked at older docs, it does tell you to set it to 0 and make sure you have the native vlan set on the trunk. Newer docs have it telling you to tag the management:)

Step 3 in this v7.0 guide:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/7.0MR1/configuration/guide/cg_ports_interfaces.html#wp1286790

VLAN identifier

Note Enter 0 for an untagged VLAN or a nonzero value for a tagged VLAN.
