Replace AP 1136 with 3502

Hi One AP1131AG-A-K9 lose Band A function. We are going to replace it with AIR-CAP3502I-A-K9. The WLC is 5508. My question is, do we just plug the new AP in to replace or we need to configure something for the new AP before we plug it in? Thank you

Hi @wfqk

Yes but depends on your environment.

If you have DHCP option 43 then the AP will get the WLC IP address during the boot process and will join smoothly.

If you don't then the AP will look for a different approach. Some options are broadcast, DNS resolution of CISCO.CAPWAP.CONTROLLER or previous configuration (Priming).

If all this option fail, then, AP will reboot and star over.

If you replace the AP and it start blink led in different colors for too long probably it is not finding the WLC.

One option you have is console to the AP before fix it and add configuration manually.

1. On wlc side, how can I know the DHCP option43 is already setup?

DHCP option 43 does not appear on the WLC, only on the DHCP scope. Unless, you use the WLC as DHCP server.

To console and configure the AP manually, follow this steps:

capwap ap ip address <IP address> <subnet mask>
capwap ap hostname <name>
capwap ap ip default-gateway A.B.C.D
capwap ap controller ip address A.B.C.D

Hi I can enter all below commands except capwap ap hostname <name>

capwap ap ip address <IP address> <subnet mask>
capwap ap hostname <name>
capwap ap ip default-gateway A.B.C.D
capwap ap controller ip address A.B.C.D

Please see this. I got error message. Do you think this command can be used? Thank you

ERROR!!! Command is disabled.

There´s a bug with the same description "CSCtl96208". The recommended workaround is configure is from the WLC, which I believe is valid as the hostname is not necessary for the AP to join the WLC.

You can safely do it later after joined.

You need this command on the following situation.

You have a remote DHCP server and your wlc need pass through a layer 3 switch. Then, you can use this command for forward DHCP broadcast into a unicast frame to the DHCP server.

Further more, your wlc need to be in Transparent mode, otherwise, if in proxy mode you don't need this either.
