Multiple 5508 controllers ... can 1 be on diff software to support "newer aps"

I have 3 5508 controllers on 7.0 software which supports older aps i.e. 1231 ... For new expansion we have purchased 3602's which only run on 7.2 or higher. I have a 4th controller that is on 7.4 ... can I connect the new 3600's just to that controller? Can I have all 4 on my WCS ???

Hi Sidney,

Yes you can use the new AP on the WLC with code 7.2 and above.

You have mentioned that you are using WCS but I doubt if WCS would support 5508 at 7.2 code as its last support was 7.0. Probably you would have to upgrade from WCS to NCS /PI.

Like Leo mentioned, you need to know the risk of doing that. Even though the 1231's are not supported on v7.4, you don't want those access points to try to join the new controller. If you have other ap's like the 1240's, they can join the new controller because the code supports them.

Yes Thanks I am aware of the software and what can join which and that if I have only 1 controller for the newer or old aps that if it fails I have no redundancy. I gather that on the WCS it has to be upgraded if I have controllers that are on newer software than 7.0 as well.

This issue might be that the older AP's might join the new WLC and bounce back and forth, not really redundancy I would be worried about.

Im thinking of creating a diff lan for the 3600's and upgrading 1 of the controllers for just the 3600's... That way I can keep everything else the same and upgrade later when we replace the 115 old AP's... would being on a separate lan keep the old aps from trying to join the upgraded controller
