Assign High Availability to multiple APs At once

I have this question.

I need to assign primary controller to more than 100 APs to another controller so I can push the upgrade 7.0.235 code.

Instead of doing one at a time through the High Availability tab, is there an easier way to be doing on bunches of 10-20-50-100?

Thank you and i would appreciate some hints here.

I would assume there is a way but possibly I did not discover it.

You can enter the command on the CLI if you don't have WCS/NCS or Prime Infrastructure. If you know or have all the AP Names, you can use excel formula to generate the following commands. You can also go on the GUI... under Wireless | Global Configurations and set the primary, secondary and or tertiary. if you don't have an entry already set.

Here is the CLI command.

config ap primary-base

config ap secondary-base

One other thing is... if your pushing the commands through the CLI, if you have a primary and secondary already configured on the AP's, you will need to enter a bogus wlc name and ip address. It will fail if your trying to change the secondary to the primary, etc.

So If I go to Wireless ==> Global Config ==> and under High Availability enter my new primary and my new secondary, I click Apply and that will do it to all APs? estimated Downtime of the APs? Thank you

The Global config Primary/Secondary are actually the Fourth and Fifth WLC that an AP will try.

I need to make 100 APs associate with another controller with one move, is there any way? Thank you. I tried the Global and it did not work for me. 7.0.98 version of Code.

You need to make sure the WLC's are in the same mobility group and the the mobility is up. Also you need to make sure AP fallback is enabled in order to have the AP's move to the other WLC.

Same Mobility group and Fall Back is enabled.

Well for one, you should download the new code on the existing WLC and then download the new image to the AP's prior to the move... this helps in the amount of time the AP's will stay down. See this link:

Bounce one of the AP's and see if it moves... did you set the primary and secondary on the AP?

I bounced it manually going to the actuall ap and it worked but when I migrated 2 test APs to another controller and I pushed in the global parameters did not work.

Not sure why is that?

The AP primary and secondary overrides that global setting done on the WLC. You would need to remover the primary, secondary and or tertiary on the AP to use the WLC Global setting.

Sorry, Scott. I'll have to disagree with this.

Most of the time I have 30+ WAPs to move around so I always assign the secondary WLC details first, like below:

config ap secondary-base

< --- THIRTY (or so) WAPs --- >

config ap secondary-base

config ap primary-base

< --- THIRTY (or so) WAPs --- >

config ap primary-base

The logic behind the madness is because if I assign all the primary WLC details first, by the time I start assigning secondary WLC details, the WAPs are gone.

Well when I script it, the ap's take a while to move... I have done 150+ with no issues... but I cut and paste the whole script. Either way, you can do the secondary then the first.
