I am trying to update the IOS for Aironet 1252G wirless access point, I have look at all the instruction and they don't make sense! And there are no instuctions on how update the IOS in the WEB BROWSER interface. I just did a install of a Windows 2008R2 Server and it real simple compared to just getting AP up and running, but then again Microsoft and their staff try to keep things simple for the people where CISCO makes theings more complex.

Hi,

If you are trying to upgrade the IOS on a Cisco AP the recomeneded upgrade is using the cli via a telnet session or console.

****************************************************************************

RECOMMENDED UPGRADE TROUGH CLI:

The following are the proper steps to do an IOS upgrade in a CLI/Telnet
session (This is the recommended upgrade):

1st: Use a TFTP server in the computer that you are going to use for the
upgrades. If you don't have one, get the free TFTP server in the following
link:

http://tftpd32.jounin.net

Note: Make sure that the computer and the APs are in the same subnet. For
example and AP in default settings will have IP: 10.0.0.1, so you need to
have the computer as IP 10.0.0.2, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0.

2nd: Download the IOS image from the Cisco.com Web site.
Note: Do not "unzip" the image.

3rd: Open the TFTP server (make sure that the TAR file's name of the IOS
image is shown as in the web site, because sometimes it gets renamed to
"Download .tar" and if that happens you need to rename it). Browse the TAR
file and select it, then click ok.

4th: Telnet the unit, go to enable mode and enter the following command:
ap#archive download-sw /overwrite /force-reload tftp://IPAddress
of_the_tftp_server/name_of_the_IOS_image_you_downloaded

In this link, you must specify the extension, as an example:

ap#archive download-sw /overwrite /force-reload tftp://10.0.0.2/c1200-k9w7-tar.122-13.JA.tar

Note: The IOS image name is case sensitive, and it should be complete.
******************************************************************************

This is the same procedure for any AP in IOS mode, the difference would be the image used for each specifc model.

If you have corrections please makes them!

Step 1: Download the IOS to PC to your desktop.

Step 2: Goto a site and download the TFTP software and install the sofware on your PC.

Step 3: If you are using DHCP, let the DHCP assign and address to the AP.

Step 4: If you are not using DHCP go into the Access Point thru the console command and assign IP address. According to the Manauls I have read some models

of Aironets have 10.0.0.1 assign the 1252G doesn't.

Step 5: Buy the external powers supply it make life easier. I just plugged in on my desk and configured the AP.

Step 6: According to the Manual make sure you have radios off before proceeding.

Step 7: Now you can use the Web Browser Interface.

Step 8: Now you open the Web Browser Interface, not a full window.

Step 9: Now you upload the IOS to the TFTP software on your PC.

Step10: Now you copy the TFTP IOS to the WEb Brower TFTP install and start the install and hope it works!

Note: You should purchase and RJ45 to DB9(serial) cable. I found that HP RJ45 to DB9 will work.

Since I did't have serial port on my Laptop, I purchased I/O Grear usb to serial converter cable and software works great!

The first time I tried this I screwed it up and had to call CISCO to fixed it (Cisco Support agreement great stuff)!

The sheer complexitiy of this in this day and age is STUPID!
