Rename AP Name?

Hello,

I think I've already got the answer to this but I thought I'd at least ask anyway.

I've got a Cisco 2504 wireless controller, and I'd like to rename the AP name in the overview (at Monitor > AP's > Radios) so that I know which unit is placed where and hence be able to troubleshoot more easily.

I haven't found any info about this, and usually that means it's not an option, right? I realise the AP name field comes from the device itself, but it seems impossible to rename the device too since I'm running on lightweight, correct?

What you're trying to do isn't possible on a WLC I'm afraid. If you have WCS/NCS/Prime you can achieve that goal in a different way via the Maps, but it's not clear if that's an option for your deployment?

Sorry, Cisco are in the throws of upgrading their Network Management software from legacy products (like WCS and LMS) to a unified product that can manage Wired and Wireless LANs simultaneously (Prime Infrastructure). So, if you have WCS or Prime Infrastructure, you can use these products to achieve what you're trying to do, but if not, I'm afraid your stuck.

If you've never seen Prime in action, you can get a VMware full-functionality / limited time / limited scale demo from Cisco so you can try it out for yourself.

Alright, thank you for clarifying that. Well I'm not there yet, but I've been looking for better ways to manage one or several networks in an effecient way. Problem is always that is mustn't cost much

I have always renamed AP's using commands entered on the CLI of the WLC. You can create a script in excel to produce the commands:

config ap name

Then you can also add the location value of the ap:

config ap location

Any change done on the WLC either through the GUI or cli will show up on both the GUI or cli. You can issue a show ap summary on the cli to also get a list of joined access points.
