Thank you once again. Based on what you've told me (and based on my previous experience with 800-series ISRs), it sounds like your internal AP hardware has failed. I have seen this quite a few times before--the wlan ap can fail in 800-series routers without affecting wired routing functionality, and in these cases, the router will fail to respond to service-mod wlan-ap 0 reset.

I recommend you open a TAC case to RMA the router, as I believe that the internal AP cannot be replaced independently.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Thanks,

--Scott

Yes, you can open a TAC case

Yes, you can open a TAC case to start an RMA--that's actually how RMAs are supposed be generated. You can either open a case on SCM (https://tools.cisco.com/ServiceRequestTool/scm/mgmt/case) or call TAC at one of their global telephone numbers: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/web/tsd-cisco-worldwide-contacts.html#telephone

Based on my experience, this is unlikely to be caused by a bug or a problem with your version of IOS. These really are classic symptoms of hardware failure on the AP. However, I am aware of a bug (CSCuq33838) that can cause show service-module wlan-ap 0 status to give incorrect results.

The following IOS versions correct this bug:

15.5(0.12.01)GB

15.5(0.16.01)CG

15.5(0.20)PI27a

15.5(0.20.04)CG

15.5(1.02.01a)GB

I can't say for sure whether installing one of those versions on your AP will resolve your issue, but upgrading to one of those versions may help if this bug is, in fact, responsible. Again--to me--this looks very much like a physically failed AP, so if it were my router, I would probably request an RMA, but you can upgrade your IOS version at your own discretion.

Please be advised there is a large amount of difference between 12.4(10b) JDA and 15.5! Depending on how your router is configured, an IOS upgrade may have unintended negative consequences. If you choose to upgrade, then I strongly urge you to check your configured features against the Cisco Feature Tracker tool (http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/index.jsp) to ensure compatibility with the newer version.

Thank you,

Unfortunately, without a contract, there's not a lot you will be able to do. I wish you the best of luck getting this resolved! Please post again when you get the wireless back up and running--I really believe it's a hardware problem (I saw this exact same issue almost a hundred times with 881W ISRs in my last job--it's almost always the hardware with those symptoms). But if you put a new image on there and that solves the problem, I definitely want to hear about that!

If and only if you are able to session into your wlan-ap, you can do the following steps--the wlan-ap upgrade is initiated from within the wlan-ap session itself.

If you cannot even session into the wlan-ap anymore, then that definitely points to hardware failure, and at that point, you really have no choice but to initiate an RMA.

But if you CAN get into the wlan-ap, then do the following:

First, you'll need to set up a PC or other end device as a TFTP server. Then:

1. Copy the new AP IOS from your TFTP server to your router;

2. From the router, enter this configuration command: "tftp flash:IOS.tar"

(The above will make your 892W into a tftp server, and the wlan-ap will then be able to download the file from the 892W).

3. Session into your AP and issue this command: "archive download-sw tftp://[Router IP Address]/IOS.tar".
