topic What is the best type or AP for Voice over Wireless LAN in Wireless

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if someone can offer some advice regarding the selection of the correct type of AP for Voice over Wireless LAN deployments.

We are looking to install Cisco 7925G VoWLAN phones, how ever it is not clear for me if we can use the APs form the 1600 series 2600 or 3600.

Will the system work good on the 1600 series? What are the differences between 1600 2600 and 3600 when we are speaking about voice as the main refferance (video is also important).

The wireless LAN system will be installed onboard 100m + ships.

but I was looking to find a comparison between the AP1600 and 2600 in a VoWLAN deployment.

The underlying question is budget. The 1K are the cheapest and the 2K are the mid-level. 3K is the "big daddy" of them all.

When it comes to Cisco, you-get-what-you-paid-for rule applies. The most important part of a VoWLAN deployment is site survey. Even if I have limited budget, I'd get the 2K than the 1K.

The new 2800 and 3800 AP models have just been announced. The Data Sheet should be out in the next few days. I'd be looking out for those to protect my investment(s). Translation: The 1600/2600 were released two years ago. 1700/2700 was released last year. It means the APs have a "life" before Cisco announces EoS. Get the latest one instead of the old models.

Either will work for voice. The real question what are your needs. How many voice clients, how many data clients, what is the use case. The more robust ap you purchase the more options and more performance. Make sense?

Hi George,

The APs are instaled onboard a ship (100m long)

The ship has many different type of rooms.

- There cabin where the crew lives in will have for example 2 VoWLAN phone, 2 personal smartphones, 2 personal laptops, 1 ipad

- Then there are rooms where the crew is gathering to eat this could have a good 20+ devices during the diner for example.

- Then there are long hallways (full coverage is required)

- There are also rooms like the engineroom, here almost all is surrounded by metal

What is your advice here?

Sadly budget often rules project these days. Really depends on what your use case and future require to are. It sounds like you can do the lower end model access points to save some capital.
