Cisco 1552E conversion to Autonomous mode

Thanks all for your responses.

I have yet to sucessfully convert my 1552E to autonomous mode for my site surveys.

I am attaching the IOS Bootloader image from latest attempt.

The AP is not attached to a controller. it is directly connected to my laptop via the Ethernet cable and the console cable.

My IP address on the PC/tftp server is 10.0.0.2

Any feedback is welcome.

Hello all I was wondering if anyone has sucessfully converted a 1552E to autonomous mode with the c1520-k9w7-tar.default code?

I have done conversions on the 1602, 2602 and the 3602 with a few minor issues such as having to rename the code from k9w7 to k9w8, but have gotten them converted.

When I press the reset button during power up I don't get the same message as you do with the other access points:

button is pressed, wait for button to be released...

button pressed for 22 seconds

process_config_recovery: set IP address and config to default 10.0.0.1

process_config_recovery: image recovery

image_recovery: Download default IOS tar image tftp://255.255.255.255/ap3g1-k9w7-tar.default

Unable to create temp dir "flash:/update"

examining image...

extracting info (283 bytes)

Any suggestions are welcome.

So you downloaded this file c1520-k9w7-tar.152-2.JB.tar and renamed it to ap3g1-k9w7-tar.default and you are getting that error?

Hmmmmm ... This looks interesting.

Console into the AP and issue the command "delete /f /r flash:update" and reload the AP.

I downloaded the c1520-k9w7-tar image and renamed to .default.
I only included the ap-3g1 as an example of what the upgrade looked like when I dummied the 2600/3600 access points.

hi

what is the VID of your 1552E. 1552 AP does have issue converting to aIOS, on older VID.

take latest 15.2 JB for example, A workaround is under boot mode, first set boot as c1520-k9w7-mx.15-2.JB/c1520-k9w7-mx.15-2.JB and set boot again to c1520-k9w7-xx.15-2.JB/c1520-k9w7-mx.15-2.JB

but if reloading is experienced, it will be back to boot mode again...

I'll check if there is better alternatives...

If you want to use it as an autonomous AP I guess you could use the code as it is fully functional and supported. But then you wouldn't have a mesh ap, just a FAT AP

Hello!

I have the exact same problem - I have tried to follow your instructions in the word file, but the command "ad" ?? never heard of that one before. I have tried to copy the tar file via tftp, but once I switch the IP to 10.0.0.1, it will be changed back despite wr mem.

Have you been able to solve this annoying problem?

The only way I was able to convert the 1552E to autonomous mode was adding the MAP to my 2504 lab controller and then with a laptop connected to the network download the code via tffp. It loaded the new file within 5 minutes. No where does it state in the documentation I have read that a controller is needed.

o.k thats what I ended up doing:

on the WLC CLI:

config ap tftp-downgrade tftp-server-ip-address filename access-point-name

and that seems to have done it!

Please note on current WLC versions, this process may not work properly and isn't recommended. With the recent addition of autonmous code support for the 1552, the Survey image push from the WLC may cause the AP to not boot properly depending on the free space in Flash.

We suggest installing the Autononous image directly to the AP, using the 'archive download-sw /overwrite /reload tftp://x.x.x.x/imagename.tar' command.

If the AP is joined in LW mode and/or has the recovery image, you may need to supply 'debug capwap con cli' to be able to use that command.

I had exactly same problem. I have done what you said.

My access point has LW mode. I used

"debug capwap con cli" commad and it worked.

then I used this command

archive dowload-sw /overwrite /reload tftp://165.156.84.212/c1520-k9w7-tar.152-4.JA1.tar

then I got this error message

If i convert my air-lap1522 to autonomous one . will its functionality be the same.? or it will downgrade its funtionality.?

HI Asad,,

Traditional WLAN solutions using Autonomous AP's distribute all traffic handling, RF control, security, and mobility functions to the access point itself. However, this architecture limits visibility of 802.11 traffic to an individual access point only.

LAP: WLC handles the channel and power control and RRM seeting of this kind of AP. Easy to manage by WLC

The Autonomous (or stand-alone) AP's would generally be used in smaller deployments (maybe 5 or less) liek Small Office/Home Office scenarios.

Lightweight AP's would be used in conjunction with the WLC (Wireless Lan Controller) in Medium to Large deployments (6 AP's to 1,000's of AP's)

If you want to make WLAN management easier to handle then put in LAP mode and manage by WLC.(Best recommanded solution)

There are a lot of feature you get when using a WLC. You will loose so many features by using the mesh ap in autonomous mode. Yes it will work, but your roaming may not work as well for one. If I had a choice I would never put a mesh ap in autonomous mode unless I didn't have a WLC...

but my concert is on rf coverage . and i will be able to use both 5ghz and 2.4ghz frequencies for my clients pc's.?.

rf coverage is depends on power , channel you set on radio and type of Anteena you use on AP.

Like Sandeep mentioned, it depends on the antenna, power and data data rates... Lightweight and Autonomous would have the same coverage... its up to you to have enough coverage.

I had to convert the APs through the wireless controller, that was the only way.

Now Cisco offers the autonomous mode when you order them.
