Hello:

I have two WLAN controllers that I would like to update the software on, a 5508 running SW 8.3.130.0, and a 2504 running 8.0.110.0. I'm new to this role & my manager mentioned that the last time an attempt was made to update the software on the devices, they bricked & had to be replaced.

Assuming that this might happen again, are there factory reset steps to bring the devices back to life if they do fail to boot after the SW update?

Hi Malcom,

If a WLC fails to boot, then there is little you can do. RMA is the way if you get cisco support on these WLC.

Is there any reason why those running different versions ? Do you have legacy APs not supported beyond 8.0.x ? Below compatibility matrix should help to determine

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html#56735

If you have to stick with 8.0.x move onto 8.0.152.0 code, here is the release notes & upgrade instructions should be there

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn80mr5.html

Note that both these WLC model are last supported in 8.5.x code. You cannot use any latest software on it. Therefore you can upgrade to 8.5.135.0 specially if you got 2800/3800 APs.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn85mr3.html

In long term, you need to plan hardware replacement for these WLC. ( Look 3504/5520 WLCs).

HTH

Rasika

*** Pls rate all useful responses ***

I've done multiple upgrades since using controllers and I've never had to brick any one of them.

Make sure you read the Release Notes carefully.
