WLC 5520 Call Home issue

Hello,

We have recently upgraded our WLC 5520 from 8.2.170.0 to 8.5.171.0.

Since we have this message on the smart license status :

It seems it's working, we are correctly registered and Authorized, however we can see "Last Communication Attempt : Failed" each time.

Is it a "cosmetic" bug ? Have you ever faced this ?

Due to some reason, some time it fails, but check in 1 or 2 days see if the able to connect to smart license server.still have issue investigate controller can reach internet cisco smart License servers. by telnet port 443

check the config : (do you have any proxy )

Yes I had observed this before with the previous firmware, but now it fails everytime.
No we don't have proxy.

Hey it's 5520, why not use RTU licensing?

You really don't need to go through the smart licensing hassle.

Because we have some smart licenses for this controller. And if I want to revert to RTU I will have to reboot the controller ☹

Furthermore, to be honest I don't understand why we should revert to RTU
while there is a smart licensing feature existing ! It should be running
correctly.

Right to use only when you do first time, but RTU is not License, it is for Test License or Trail License, until you get License in place.

Being a License holder, going back to RTU (not a great idea for me) - For now your device is Registered, Nothing to happens for your License here.

It keep Tries, still you see next time Failed, worth to Open a TAC case to investigate.

RTU is perfectly valid. It isn't for trial or test purposes. It's an honour-based concept...

Licensing on 3504, 5520 and 8540 Wireless LAN Controllers: RTU FAQ - Cisco

The evaluation license is for test/trial.

I'd maybe look at firewall logs to see if the WLC's traffic is being blocked, or if traffic is even reaching it from the WLC.

I've tried to register again the WLC with a new token and "force".

Now it's failing even for the registration ...

I guess its time for a TAC case, if you don't have the entitlement to open a case, you may try with licensing TAC.

I didn't test to do a de-registration before register the WLC again, can I do that without any problem ? I mean it won't need to WLC to reboot or won't disrupt anything ?

I had opened a support case within the Smart Licensing portal assistance, and they helped me to solve this issue.

I had to do on both WLCs :

test smart-lic stop

test smart-lic start

Then I registered again with a token our WLC, and this time it's registered successfully !
