Hello Team,

Please explain the wlc behavior in the following scenario.

WLC model=5520

Ap model=3700

Current Image version=8.5.161(cisco airos image)

New Image version planning to upgrade=8.5.171.0

As the wlc's are in enterprise network, have predownloaded the image to the wlc and the access points.

The wlc's are in SSO mode.(active/standby).

During the down time have reset the wlc using the command

reset system both in 00:03:00 image swap reset-aps save-config

After this command the primary wlc came up with new image but the secondary wlc went down.

Please explain how the step by step process when upgrade happens when we reset the wlc,

Which wlc will reboot and comes up with the new image

since access points also have the predownloaded image , will access point reboot first and wait for the wlc to boot up and come live?

why the HA between the primary and secondary wlc fails.

Regards,

Anjana

WLC will reboot to the new image.

Hi,

Did you check the redundancy state before reboot ?

https://www.booches.nl/2017/02/cisco-wlc-ha-sso-upgrade/

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wireless-lan-wlan/68835-wlc-upgrade.html#anc10

FYI: When you upgrade, the image is pushed and verified on each WLC. Best is to have console access to both controllers.Normally the reboot is suppose to reload both controllers, primary then secondary. This is not 100%, so that is why I mentioned having console. You should be able to see when the controllers reboot and where they are at during the reboot. If you noticed that the primary is coming up online and the seconds doesn’t reboot, you will have the primary go into maintenance mode because the secondary which is active has a different firmware image. I have seen this and have had to issue the reload command manually from the console of the secondary unit.

Regards

Dont forget to rate helpful posts

Actually thought of doing the activity remotely, finally ended with local IT support for console cable.

yeah i have checked the secondary wlc before the upgrade and it was in sync.

Regards,

Anjana
