Part of what you will see, depends on the device NIC capabilities, just like what Leo was asking. If you configure 80 or 160 channel width, but your device only supports 40 as an example, you will only achieve the capabilities of the device. 2.4ghz is only 20 mhz capable on the controller. Channel width you can go as high as long as the ap supports that. If you search the forum, you will see a lot of post on throughput. Just keep in mind that wireless is half duplex, so if your device shows 600mbps connection, your max throughput would be half of that.

Hello Guys,

I hope everyone is well... Im writing today looking for help on a wireless topic. I got a pair of 3702i Aps and I load a standalone image on them (ap3g2-k9w7-mx.153-3.JPL). Im trying to get the best throughtput on the 5Ghz radio, I know the c3702i supports 802.11ac. I have seen this model form AP working at 802.11ac but only when is hook to a WLC, never as a standalone config. I tried to enable the "channel width 80" on the radio Do1 however I still see 40Mhz channel and I dont see the 80Mhz. Also I enable all the MCS rates until m.23, however when I try to enable the other AC rates I cant it does not take the changes on the GUI, I tried on the CLI and after enable all the AC rates, the channel width changes to 20Mhz instead of 40Mhz.

I would like to ask some help from an expert and I will attach the current config from the 5Ghz radio:

interface Dot11Radio1
description RADIO-5.8Ghz
no ip address
no ip route-cache
!
encryption mode ciphers aes-ccm
!
ssid THE-XXXXXXXX-5.8GHz
!
antenna gain 0
peakdetect
no dfs band block
speed basic-12.0 basic-24.0 basic-48.0 basic-54.0 m0. m1. m2. m3. m4. m5. m6. m7. m8. m9. m10. m11. m12. m13. m14. m15. a1ssnone a2ssnone a3ssnone
channel width 80
channel dfs
station-role root
bridge-group 1
bridge-group 1 subscriber-loop-control
bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
bridge-group 1 block-unknown-source
no bridge-group 1 source-learning
no bridge-group 1 unicast-flooding
end

with this config I see the channel width is 40Mhz not 80Mhz as it currently configured. Also I need to enable al the MCS rates m.23 and the AC rates. Could you please show me the best config for the 5GHz radio for an c3702i standalone AP?

Thank you I would appreciate your help!!!

Have a good day!!! thank you again for the help!!

Best Regards,

D.

Hi

3700 is a bit old. It seems to me that it require a 802.11ac module in order to benefit com ac. Does your AP have this module?

https://www.cisco.com/c/pt_br/support/interfaces-modules/aironet-access-point-module-802-11ac/model.html

The best anyone can get on an autonomous AP3700 is around 600-700 Mbps:

1. Tell us, what speed does the AP have? 1 Gbps, right?

2. If there is congestion to all the channels being combined.

3. No wireless NIC can really support sustained >1.2 Gbps of traffic.

Hi There, I currently have 500Mbps bandwidth however the AP with the config I just mention before can get around 200Mbps but its only showing a 40Mhz channel not really an 80Mhz on the config I see 80Mhz but using and analyzer I see only 40Mhz. Also I know the 3700 does not need the module to use 802.11ac Wave1, if you would like to run Wave2 you need the module.

the AP comes with a 1Gbps interface. I have it connected to a 1Gbps switch as well. Thank you for your time!!!

Have a great day!

D.

Thank you for the heads up, I did some more testing and I was conecting the AP using 802.11af instead of 802.11at now the APs are using 16.8W each and the 4x4 is working fully. however I still getting 200Mbps on both directions and the switch is GigaEthernet as well as the AP. I will continue testing and see what I can find! Thanks for the heads up.

Hi There,

Im testing with Laptops, and iPhones and Android devices. I found that my APs to have a better throughput need to be power on with poe+ they are using now 16.8W (Power drawn: 16.800 Watts) that helps to get the Speed I was looking for, also the configuration for the interface Dot11Radio1 in 5GHz is the following:

L&D-AP01#sh run int do1
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 734 bytes
!
interface Dot11Radio1
description RADIO-5.8Ghz
no ip address
no ip route-cache
!
encryption mode ciphers aes-ccm
!
ssid Wifi-Access-5.8GHz
!
antenna gain 0
no peakdetect
no dfs band block
speed basic-6.0 9.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 48.0 54.0 m0. m1. m2. m3. m4. m5. m6. m7. m8. m9. m10. m11. m12. m13. m14. m15. m16. m17. m18. m19. m20. m21. m22. m23. a1ss9 a2ss9 a3ss9
power local 2
channel width 80
channel dfs
station-role root
dot11 dot11r pre-authentication over-ds
dot11 dot11r reassociation-time value 200
bridge-group 1
bridge-group 1 subscriber-loop-control
bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
bridge-group 1 block-unknown-source
no bridge-group 1 source-learning
no bridge-group 1 unicast-flooding
end

That config will enable the 802.11ac Wave 1 band for users to get higher throughput. I was able the get rates over the 200Mbps also I enable fast roaming 802.11r between the standalone APs I have here deployed it works perfectly. Also I had to lower the TX power on the APs, to get a faster roamming for the clients, I tested the roamming with concurrent calls and it worked well.
Im hopping this helps to others that are struggling with the config from the Autonomous APs.

Thank you all for the help!!!

Powering up the ap is very important as you can see. On you initial post, you should of called that out. Folks would of caught that and provided the links to tell you how many radios would of been functioning as the ap would of been running in degraded mode. At least you are fine now with what you are seeing.
