Hi I am trying to test wlc 9800 .ova(17.3.3, 17.3.4 etc) in vmware workstation(15.5). I notice most of them cannot be imported into the workstation. Once clicking on the .ova file, I got the below error message. and only a few of them can be imported. I am thinking if the .ova files are damaged. When trying to import the .ova file into esxi, it also show error message. I redownloaded the same ova to try, it has the same issue. Anyone has experience on this? Thank you

never tried on workstation, but on esxi works as expected as below installation guide :

- Verify md5sum of downloaded file (integrity and completeness check). 2) For esxi try to deploy the OVA via vCenter 3) Officially the cloud controller is not supported on vmware workstation.

Open the VMX file under your VM directory in Notepad (C:\Users\<USername>\Documents\Virtual Machines\<VM Name>)

Change the below parameter

ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000" from ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3"

Then save the file. Restart the VM.

VMWare workstation is not officially supported, so unless you are trying to LAB something I would rule out deploying it in Workstation.

I thought the VMworkstation was not supported. I can tell you the VMware ESXi 6.7 - 7.x works fine and is a supported platform. You might want to take a look at this link to see if there is something different they do to get it to work.

Thank you all for your reply! vmware workstation is just for test purpost especially when needing to confirm some config etc.

@Arshad Safrulla your link is for trying to resolve some issue after creating vm. but my issue is unable to import .ova file into workstation.

I understand… I stopped using VM Workstation a few years back for Cisco Wireless VM’s because it just didn’t work or work right. You are better off building an ESXi White box for your testing. That is what I do and I use it for a whole bunch of different things. Even if you get VM Workstation going, I wouldn’t use that to validate anything. There are differences when setting up a 9800-CL vs a 9800 appliance also.
