UBIQUITI SWITCH with CISCO AP1832

Hi all,

planning to use 13 or 20 Cisco AP1832 on an a spare Ubiquiti Switch. The AP are running ME one of them acting as a controller. Will this work ok? Using the AP as Cisco controller? or will there be some lost functionalities, issues etc. Any recommendations? License issues to consider (understand should be ok with ME)? Any suggestions to make this as smooth as possible. Thank you!

I would really avoid 1800-series AP:

- The underlying switch being none-cisco will have no effect on the mobility express setup and or environment ,

1) Just that we have them atm and would be a temp solution for a year while waiting for a full refit.

2) By failures you mean the AP stop working, or functionalities issues showing up/performance etc?

Hello,

looking at the data sheet, it appears that you need a DNA subscription if you want to use the 1832 as a controller for other access points:

--> Licensing

In order to connect any access points to the controller, Cisco DNA software subscriptions are required. To be entitled to connect to a Cisco Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controller, the access point requires a Cisco DNA subscription license.

Thank you @Mark Elsen , so plugging-in all the APs on the available Ubiquiti switch (the only switch on the system) and using MobilityExpress with one of the AP acting as AP controller, everything should work fine and should not have any issues/loss of functionality/performance with the AP/WLAN? thanks!

We have these ones setup already via MobilityExpress and one of them being the AP controller. Just that as the Cisco 2960 switch is failing, we are temporarly thinking to replace it with an Ubiquiti switch that we have from another rack.

1) So wouldn't the current license/DNA just keep working?

2) If we reset all of them and update all of them do we have to reregister etc for the licenses?

3) I also understand that there are no license requirements using MobilityExpress

Yes and when the End-of-Support date rolls past, the APs cannot be RMA-ed anymore.

only needing them for 1 more year or a bit more it should be enough no? looks like support and security updates available till 2026/2027?

Correct no license required for mobility express as long as you aren't using DNAC.

Yes hardware failure. After a few years the components burn out and hardware RMA is required. If you already have the APs just keep using them but don't be surprised if they start to fail. Just don't buy any more of them - look at the Catalyst 91xx APs.
