A friend gave me a Cisco air-ap2802e-E-k9. Can I use it as a Wi-Fi extender / repeater on my home network as a standalone without a controler. I've done some searching on Google but the manual doesn't make much sense to me. Can I use my PC or laptop set it up for my netweork? I have Fibre and a 4 port Wi-Fi router for internet access

Thanks Kevin

Hi @kevberg18

You can add this AP as standalone on your network as long as you convert it to mobility express. I dont believe it will work as a repeater of the existing Access Point but you can sure propagate you SSIDs on it.

What you need to do is get connected to the AP and figure out which AP image it has. If the image running is not Mobility Express you need to convert. I will add down below a guide tor that. Just keep in mind that you may need to download IOS from cisco site and you need a valid contract for that.

https://semfionetworks.com/blog/convert-a-cisco-capwap-ap-to-a-mobility-express-ap/

But before make any move, identify the AP IOS you have by connectiing to it. If you see the AP rebooting all the time and not letting you even enter commands, there´s a chance this AP is capwap mode and need to be converted.

Hi Flavio. Than you for the reply. In the link you gave above, it mentions having to connect to an AirConsole Unit via BlueTooth. Does that mean I have to purchase one before I'll be able to connect to the AP from my PC or Laptop. Both are on Windows 10 operating system

No, it is not necessary. Must be because the dude was using MacOs but for windows you can get a standard Console cable and use USB adpter on the PC side.

Hi Flavio. Sorry to bug you again. Will a normal Cat 5 cable from the AirConsole Unit Console port to an RJ45 to USB connector not work as a console cable? is the wiring different on the connectors? On Google I found something about Rollover Cable. Will it work if I make up my own Cat 5 cable with that wiring pinout?

Hi,

Yes, you can make your console cable if you use the right pinout, there´s no problem. I made console cable many times in my life.

I've made up a rollover but not having any luck. If I plug the LAN cable from the POE into my router and my PC to the router, the light on the AP flashes green red blue and I can see the IP address of the AP is 192.168.1.15 with My Lanviewer and when open PuTTy on my PC and enter the IP address, after about half a minute it returns message of Connection timed out. The light on the When I then connect the rollover cable into the console port and into a USB to RJ45 adaptor connected to my PC with the LAN cable from POE LAN port plugged into my PC LAN port as shown on the picture in the link you gave me and I type in the IP address, it immediately gives message Network error. No rout to host and the light on AP flashes between green and red. Please help

Using the network (IP address) will not be possible. Your best option is console cable.

Try to buy a console cable on the internet, there are many good cable and adpters
