Each WLC software version has a corresponding version of AP software. That mapping can be found in the compatibility matrix table which you quoted.

So in the example you gave a WLC running 17.9.3.50 would download 3700 IOS version 15.3(3)JPN2 to the AP. The info file contained in the AP image .tar file also lists the corresponding WLC version number.

Hi,

I have an old AP (3700) and it seems it's compatibile with the new 9800 WLC but with specific version:

Access Point Image version number: 17.9.3.50
Access Point Release: 15.3(3)JPN2

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html

now I understand the image version number is the software running, but what's the release number? how do I get it?

Hello @HusseinLTD,

The "release number" typically refers to the software version of the Access Point's firmware or operating system. This version number provides information about the specific software release that is installed on the access point. It is an alphanumeric identifier assigned to a specific version of the firmware. It typically consists of several parts, including the main version number, a maintenance release number, and sometimes additional letters or codes indicating specific features or variations.

With #show version command on you AP you should see theses informations.
