9800-ha vm reload

Hello Team,

We have two 9800 wlc running on 17.9.2 , both the wlc's are running in active standby mode.These wlc are installed in VM two different clusters.

Please suggest best practise to reload asecondary node of the wlc.(our requirement the VM teams wants to reload the secondary wlc(host stand by)

There is no best practice here - if the WLC is secondary you can go ahead and reload the WLC VM, since Active WLC already running, - i do not see any risk here. ( as Long as the Cluster already working ?)

- Secondary (standby) can always be reloaded without any impact , below are a number of commands to verify correct states afterwards (e.g.)

show chassis
show chassis detail
show chassis ha-status local
show chassis ha-status active
show chassis ha-status standby
show chassis rmi
show redundancy
show redundancy history
show redundancy switchover history

If you want to shut down the 9800-CL it is recommended that you do it gracefully following this simple procedure:

● Before you power off the VM from the hypervisor, run the exec command reload pause – this command will reload the box and then pause, waiting for the user input to start.

● At this point, go ahead and power off the VM.

i was going through the documentation (may be not found similar command in hardware appliance) - is there any way we can pause due to some reason ?

shut down the 9800-CL it is recommended that you do it gracefully

This command effectively does a graceful shutdown of the WLC VM.

@Rich R - apologies for the confusion here - similar command WLC appliance (not virtual) - available to pause ?

@balaji.bandi yes it seems to be a standard IOS-XE command but I have not seen any recommendation to use it on appliances. I think VMs are a special case because they use virtual disks and there's an interaction with the hypervisor.

ok so there is no use case for appliance to pause, instead we shutdown for not to become split brain

(the use case here is have 2 DC WLC not connected back to back) - they go vial L2 link, when we need to maintenance we need to shutdown standby WLC not become both active / active )
