From the show version command, we can see ap1g6b

This code tells us that the AP is running AP-COS which is similar to clickOS or IOS.

These APs and software are pretty new to everyone and cause trouble. I am not sure if you have the command "ap-type capwap" available on there, if you do, that could be one way out.

If not, maybe you need to get a different firmware version in order to add this AP in the WLC.

"The Cisco Catalyst IW9165E Rugged Access Point and Wireless Client (hereafter referred to as IW9165E) is designed to add ultrareliable wireless connectivity to moving vehicles and machines. The IW9165E runs Cisco Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul (Cisco URWB), which delivers high availability, low latency, and zero packet loss with seamless handoffs.

The IW9165E can also operate as a Wi-Fi client in Workgroup Bridge (WGB) mode, which allows it to connect to a Cisco access point infrastructure, and Universal WGB (uWGB) mode, which allows it to connect to a third-party access point infrastructure. Both of these modes help bridge the wired clients that are behind the WGB to the access point on the infrastructure side."

I start to think that this AP is not for normal AP usage.

But, I am not sure. Best way to figure out. Put this AP in the same network as the WLC or connect It to a network with DHCP with option 43.

If by any chance this is made to work with WLC , It Will Join. But, as per documentation this seems to be made for backhau and wgb

Like Leo and the others I'm somewhat baffled as to how this AP can be running software version 8.8.1.10 because it is not supported, at all, on AireOS. The first version of 9800 IOS-XE to support the AP is 17.14.1 as per
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html#ctrl_release-ap-support and the first version of AP software for this model is 15.3.3-JPS
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286331478/type/286288051/release/15.3.3-JPS

The URWB software seems to use the same version numbers now too, but ap1g6b is the lightweight (CAPWAP) image!

I can only assume you have somehow acquired this AP with experimental/pre-release software installed. You can try using DHCP with AP locally connected so that it can access the WLC via broadcast discovery to download supported code. If you cannot get the AP configured with an IP statically or via DHCP (so that it can download working software) then you'll need to contact TAC for RMA.

I think this AP is an Cisco internal demo unit and found itself in the used market.

What I read here is "You need to choose the image to boot up with according to the mode your AP is running, CAPWAP or URWB."
