Thank you so much..

In my understanding, while the primary controller is reloading(netowrk down),all accept points will try to connect with the secondary controller.

So, i think that there has no effect on customers ,except a few secondes while changing their management controller.

Is that understanding incorrect?

I want to add performance licese on my controller (both primary and secondary controller).

But, I am not sure how long network downtime will it take.

Has there any effect on users ?

If yes, how long will it take?

WLC will reload which means there will be network downtime. You can consider something about 10 minutes and, yes, user will disconnect as all Access point will reload. Do it in off hours.

If your setup is N+1 and all your AP’s are on WLC1, you can install it on the WLC2 and reboot that controller. Once that is back online, you can install it on the WLC1 and reboot that. You will have a minute or so where connections drop so keep that in mind. Or else you can point the AP’s to WLC2 as primary and wait for the AP’s to move.

They will down time. If you are using HA SSO, both reload will reboot.

You can check this thread where some installed and describded the result.

https://community.cisco.com/t5/wireless/how-to-enable-high-performance-license-on-9800-l-c-in-ha-mode/td-p/4821858

If you are using N + 1 HA, you can reduce by doing one WLC at a time. But, I would not do this during business hours.
