I need help with Cisco 9800 Catalyst controller AP pre download via cli - how to let AP's know which image to pre-download?? we can choose dedicated AP's but how to instruct to choose a specific image to pre-download??

Let's say the WLC is currently on 17.6.5 and 17.15.3 has been "loaded" into the controller (but not yet rebooted).

When the pre-download command has been invoked, it is obvious that the AP will download the newer firmware, i. e. 17.15.3, because it is currently on the existing firmware of 17.6.5.

You cannot "choose" an image to pre-download.
The APs will pre-download whichever version you have just added using the "install add" command.
You can use the "show ap image file summary" command to see the exact image version which will be downloaded for each AP type.
