Cisco AIR AP 2800 Series - Stand Alone / Mobility Express mode

Hello Community,

I have never worked with Cisco APs before and I have just come across two Cisco AIR-AP2802E-E-K9 access points.
I would like to use them privately.

The devices are currently running the Lightwight variant, as they were apparently previously controlled by a WLC.
How can I switch the APs back to stand-alone mode?

I have tried to install the firmware AIR-AP2800-K9-ME-8-10-196-0.tar.
But that didn’t work because the OS on the APs was too old and the setup was canceled due to lack of memory.
Then I found a tip in a YouTube video that you should update to a newer lightweight version, after which Mobility Express can be installed.
I tried that (17.15.3), but now I have a Lightweight version that is too new and Mobility Express would be a downgrade, which is not accepted.

How can I revive the AP for my private use?
Or is it a new paperweight?
I wanted to put a few APs in my private storage for the case i need one.

I created a simple Cisco account where I could just download the latest firmware.
I can’t download older firmware versions :frowning:

I have a little Cisco experience with switches, but APs are new territory for me.

Indeed , note that Mobility Express conversion is only supported on the older aireos based capwap
versions. All of that being said and the practical purposes involved to get the correct software and conversion for
these fairly old APs. I discourage the project, and you are better off by looking in the home market for modern standards
and performance (for access points)

In addition to what @Mark Elsen said, if you really don't have any option to move to any latest AP then first thing you need to do is to push 8.10.196 lightweight image to the AP - https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286304510/type/286288051/release/15.3.3-JK11
Once this is done, then you can try to put it into the ME mode -
8.10.196 ME image - https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286304510/type/286289839/release/8.10.196.0
ME conversion - https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-8/b_cisco_mobility_express_8_8/m_deploying_cisco_mobility_express.html
As long as the contract is concerned to download the image - nothing much can be done. Sorry.

Hi!

This is exactly the current problem.
I do not have a valid service contract and therefore cannot download version 15.3.3.
It would be great from Cisco if at least this version could still be made available for download.
Without the slightly older firmware, I cannot update to the latest Mobility Express firmware.

- @hoerli1337 Normally those can be downloaded for free (without a Service Contract) but the 15.x versions are
deferred probably because of too many problems. The 17.x can be downloaded too for free; but those you can't use for mobility express conversion. That puts you at a dead end

Your only option is to search for the image - sometimes you may get lucky and find what you're looking for ...

I have already searched the Internet, but can only find downloads for other models or a very recent 8.10 version in an “Internet Archive”.

Correct.
However, I need version 8.3 or 8.5 as an intermediate step so that I can install 8.10.
Keine Ahnung welche der Versionen wirklich erforderlich ist, damit 8.10 installiert werden kann.
Laut ein paar Foren oder Videos im Internet, wäre 8.3 die beste Wahl.
No idea which of the versions is really required to install 8.10.
According to a few forums or videos on the internet, 8.3 would be the best choice.

You should be able to install an 8.10 CAPWAP image directly and then convert to ME.
Have you tried that?

I can't download the version of CAPWAP.
I can only get the latest one and it is too new for the latest ME version.
